On learning hard things
There’s a specific cognitive error people make when approaching difficult skills: they mistake the thing itself for the pedagogical path toward the thing. Learning quantum mechanics is hard. Learning the specific mathematical prerequisites in a careful sequence, then building up the formalism piece by piece, is merely tedious.
The confusion arises because we observe experts doing the hard thing fluently and assume we must somehow force ourselves through the same activity. A pianist plays a Rachmaninoff concerto. We sit down and attempt the concerto. This is not learning; this is self-flagellation with extra steps.
The illegibility of expertise
Anders Ericsson’s research on deliberate practice1 revealed something crucial: experts don’t actually practice by doing the hard thing. They practice by doing thousands of small things, each calibrated to sit just outside their current comfort zone. The concert pianist doesn’t practice the concerto. She practices a three-measure phrase from the second movement, at half speed, with metronome, focusing exclusively on the left hand. She does this forty times.
This seems obvious when stated explicitly. Yet watch someone try to learn programming, mathematics, or any other cognitively demanding skill. They’ll attempt to build the full application, solve the research-level problem, understand the complete proof. Then they’ll conclude they “can’t do it” or “aren’t good at it.”
Constructing learning paths
The solution isn’t motivational. It’s architectural. Hard things become learnable when you can decompose them into a directed acyclic graph of subskills, where each node represents something achievable in a single focused session.2
Consider learning to solve Rubik’s cubes blindfolded. Impossibly hard as a monolithic challenge. But you can learn letter schemes (one session), practice memorizing sequences of twelve letters (one week), learn basic cube notation (one session), master sighted solving first (one month), then combine these components. None of the individual pieces feel difficult. The achievement emerges from persistence, not from heroic effort.
The hard part isn’t the learning. It’s having the patience to build the scaffolding first, and the metacognitive awareness to notice when you’re attempting something genuinely outside your reach versus when you’re just missing prerequisites. That discernment is itself a learnable skill, which means the real meta-question is: how do we learn to learn hard things?
We start by noticing when we’re confusing the destination with the path.

This is related to what cognitive scientists call “desirable difficulties” (Bjork, 1994), though I’m describing something slightly different: the intentional construction of difficulty gradients rather than the insertion of challenges into already-structured learning. ↩︎
